Studio 100 declares comics dead

This morning at breakfast we took a look at Rekto:verso, a Flemish “magazine for culture & critics”, and read: “I think Jommeke [a very well known comics series in Flanders and the Netherlands, but rarely translated in other languages] is a succeeded cultural product for children. More than fifty million books in Flemish households! Of course the medium, the comic, is now completely outmoded, but children still find it interesting.”

Apart from the fact that the author of the quote is apparently judging something as a “succeeded cultural product” only because it’s a gigantic commercial success (and fifty million books of a comic series in Flanders is indeed gigantic), he thinks that comics, the “cultural products” that we at The Maier-Files are working on, are out of date. Antiquated, passed on, over, dead.

The author of the quote doesn’t explain why he thinks so, but we did find it somewhat amazing. Not only because personally we have other experiences, but also because the business world itself, of which the author of the quote is part, contradicts that. While Flemish sales of books in general dropped strongly in the second half of 2013, sales of comics in the same period of time arose with 10 percent.

But maybe there were not enough products of the company which the author of the quote represents as CEO in the top twenty of comics sales ? The author namely is Hans Bourlon and he is the big chief of … Studio 100, a company which is almost solely responsible for all TV programs for children in Flanders [it’s best known in the English speaking world for House of Anubis]. TV programs which have spin-offs in the form of, indeed, comics about Kabouter Plop, Piet Piraat, Samson en Gert, and Big en Betsy.

Anyway, what we read further in the same interview, put us at ease: Hans Bourlon seems to be talking nonsense frequently. Amongst other things he namely also said this: “Now we have at Flying Bark, our Australian cartoon studio, a series in the making about a koala, Blinky Bill, but a koala only lives in a number of European zoos and Australia. Compared to that Maya the Bee [which Studio 100 is also working on] has a gigantic advantage: there are bees all over the world, and nowhere with a religious connotation, which is rather exceptional for an animal.”

“Nowhere with a religious connotation”, mister Bourlon ? Already the Minoan goddess Potnia was said to be “the pure mother bee”, her priestesses were called “Melissa” (or “bee”), as were the priestesses of Artemis and Demeter and the oracles of Delphi. According to the San, a people living in the Kalahari desert, a bee was responsible for the birth of the first man, in Egyptian mythology bees were born from the tears of the god Ra, in Hinduism the cord of Kamadeva’s bow is composed of honey bees, and according to the Ugandan Baganda people Nambi disguised as a bee helped the first man Kintu. The ancient Greeks considered Aristaeus to be the god of the bees, the quran has a surah about bees, in the Jewish Midrash the Jewish people is compared to bees, and the fact that bees and the beehive are common symbols in Catholicism is generally known.

We’re not very religious ourselves, but we would dare suggesting to Hans Bourlon – in case he is – to contact Our Lady of the Bees and ask her for guidance …

Studio 100 verklaart strips dood

Deze morgen namen we bij het ontbijt Rekto:verso, een Vlaams “tijdschrift voor cultuur & kritiek”, ter hand en lazen daar: “Ik vind Jommeke een geslaagd cultuurproduct voor kinderen. Daarvan liggen meer dan vijftig miljoen albums in de Vlaamse kasten! Natuurlijk is de drager, de strip, nu volledig uit de tijd, maar het blijft iets wat kinderen boeit.”

Los van het feit dat de auteur van de uitspraak kennelijk van oordeel is dat iets alleen maar een “geslaagd cultuurproduct” is als er sprake is van een gigantische verkoop (en vijftig miljoen albums van een stripserie ís in Vlaanderen inderdaad gigantisch), meent hij dus ook dat strips, het “cultuurproduct” waarmee wij van De Maier-Files bezig zijn, “passé” zijn. Uit de tijd, overleden, voorbij, dood.

De auteur van de uitspraak zegt er niet bij waaróm hij dat denkt, maar wij vonden het toch wel een beetje verbazingwekkend. Niet alleen omdat wij persoonlijk andere ervaringen hebben, maar ook omdat zélfs de commerciële wereld waarvan de auteur van de uitspraak een exponent is hem daarin tegenspreekt. Terwijl immers de algemene boekenverkoop in Vlaanderen in de tweede helft van 2013 een stevige daling kende, stéég de verkoop van strips in diezelfde periode met 10 procent.

Maar misschien zaten er in de top twintig van de stripverkoop niet genoeg producten van de firma die de auteur van de uitspraak vertegenwoordigt als CEO ? Die auteur heet namelijk Hans Bourlon en is de grote pief van … Studio 100, een firma die bijna op zijn eentje verantwoordelijk is voor alle TV-programma’s voor kinderen die in Vlaanderen worden uitgezonden. TV-programma’s die ook spin-offs hebben in de vorm van, inderdaad, strips over Kabouter Plop, Piet Piraat, Samson en Gert, en Big en Betsy.

Ach wat, wat we verder in hetzelfde interview lazen, stelde ons gerust: Hans Bourlon blijkt wel eens vaker uit zijn nek te kletsen. Hij zei namelijk onder andere ook nog: “Wij hebben nu in Flying Bark, onze Australische tekenfilmstudio, een serie in de maak over een koala, Blinky Bill, maar een koala leeft alleen in een paar Europese dierentuinen en in Australië. Dan heeft Maya de Bij een gigantisch voordeel: je hebt bijen over de hele wereld, en nergens met een religieuze connotatie, wat voor een dier eerder uitzonderlijk is.”

“Nergens met een religieuze connotatie”, meneer Bourlon ? De Minoïsche godin Potnia werd al aangeduid als “de zuivere moederbij”, haar priesteressen werden “Melissa” (ofte “bij”) genoemd, net zoals de priesteressen van Artemis en Demeter en de orakels van Delphi. Volgens de San, een volk dat in de Kalahari woont, is een bij verantwoordelijk voor het ontstaan van de eerste mens, in de Egyptische mythologie ontstonden bijen uit de tranen van de god Ra, bij de Hindoes is de koord van Kamadeva’s boog gemaakt van bijen, bij het Oegandese Bagandavolk kwam Nambi als bij Kintu de eerste mens te hulp. Bij de oude Grieken was Aristaeus de bijengod, in de koran wordt er een soera aan gewijd, in de Joodse midrasj worden de Joden vergeleken met bijen, en dat zowel de bij als de bijenkorf bekende symbolen zijn in het katholicisme is algemeen geweten.

We zijn zelf niet zo religieus aangelegd, maar zouden durven suggereren dat Hans Bourlon – mocht hij dat wél enigszins zijn – zich eens richt tot Onze Lieve Vrouw ter Bijen en haar om wijsheid verzoekt …

The Maier-Files: work on Book 1 not finished yet

Admittedly, a week ago we wrote that Book 1 – The Initiation of The Maier-Files was ready for publication. Talks with a number of professionals from the comic world and considerations about the way we would publish Book 1 (the prequel is, as you know, available for free on our website) have however led to Pat reworking the drawings. We hope our readers will like the final result and want to give you a taste of it already: the page above.

De Maier-Files: werken aan Boek 1 nog niet beëindigd

Toegegeven, een week geleden schreven we dat Boek 1 – De Inwijding van De Maier-Files klaar was voor publicatie. Gesprekken met een aantal professionelen uit de stripwereld én overwegingen inzake de manier waarop we Boek 1 zouden publiceren (de prequel is, zoals u weet, gratis te lezen op onze website), hebben er echter toe geleid dat Pat aan het herwerken van de tekeningen is gegaan. We hopen dat het eindresultaat van dat werk onze lezers zal bevallen en willen u hierbij alvast een voorproefje geven: de pagina hierboven.

Why we don’t have a problem with conspiracy theories

You will have noticed by now that we at The Maier-Files regularly pay attention to so called “conspiracy theories”. And if you have read the prequel to our series, you will have seen that a conspiracy theory (one ?) plays a major role there (by the way: that’s even more so starting from Book 1, which by now is finished, but not yet published). So you could ask yourself: are these guys crazy ?

The answer to that question is “no”, on the contrary, scientific studies even show that we’re very sane. More sane than the people who take for granted official versions on controversial and disputed “facts”.

The most recent of those scientific studies was published in July 2013 – our apologies for the delay, but we only saw the news on the internet yesterday – by the psychologists Michael J. Wood and Karen M. Douglas of Kent University (UK). It’s entitled “What about Building 7?' A Social Psychological Study of Online Discussion of 9/11 Conspiracy Theories" and compares "conspiracist" and “anti-conspiracist” comments on news websites.

Apart from the fact that the researchers soon came to the conclusion that “conspiracy” comments were more mainstream than others (about 2 to 1), they also saw that people accepting the official story on 9/11 were generally more hostile. A phenomenon which could originate from frustration over the fact that their viewpoints thought to be mainstream were no longer considered as such by a majority.

Moreover, the researchers claim, those who fight the “conspiracy theories” are not just hostile but also fanatically wedded to their own conspiracy theorie, in the present case “one which says 19 Muslims, none of whom could fly commercial airliners with any proficiency, pulled off an amazing surprise attack under the direction of a man on dialysis (Osama bin Laden) who was living in a cave somewhere in Afghanistan”.

So, in other words, the negative stereotype generally attached to the “conspiracy theorists” doesn’t describe them but rather their opponents: a hostile fanatic holding on to his own fringe theory. Furthermore conspiracy believers look at things in a historical context – the bigger picture – more than their opponents.

Finally: “conspiracy theorists” apparently don’t like to be labeled as such. Something which Lance deHaven-Smith, in his last year published book “Conspiracy Theory in America”, explains as such: "The CIA's campaign to popularize the term 'conspiracy theory' and make conspiracy belief a target of ridicule and hostility must be credited, unfortunately, with being one of the most successful propaganda initiatives of all time".

We at The Maier-Files do not have a problem with the denomination “conspiracy theorists”. We consider it, as do many others, a badge of honor.

Waarom we geen probleem hebben met samenzweringstheorieën

U zal al wel gemerkt hebben dat wij van De Maier-Files regelmatig aandacht besteden aan zogenaamde “samenzweringstheorieën”. En als u de prequel op de serie heeft gelezen, zal u ook gezien hebben dat daarin een samenzwering (één ?) een belangrijke rol speelt (wat overigens nog meer het geval is vanaf Boek 1, dat inmiddels af is, maar nog niet gepubliceerd). De vraag die u zich dus kan stellen, is deze: zijn die jongens gek ?

Het antwoord daarop is “nee”, in tegendeel, wetenschappelijke studies tonen aan dat we geestelijk zelfs zéér gezond zijn. Gezonder dan de mensen die officiële versies over controversiële en aangevochten “feiten” aannemen.

De meest recente van die wetenschappelijke studies werd gepubliceerd in juli 2013 – onze excuses voor de vertraging, maar we zagen dat nieuws pas gisteren op het internet circuleren – door de psychologen Michael J. Wood en Karen M. Douglas van de Universiteit van Kent. In hun studie, genoemd “Wat met Gebouw 7 ? Een sociopsychologische studie van online discussie over 9/11-samenzweringstheorieën”, vergeleken ze commentaren van mensen die de “samenzweringstheorieën” verdedigden met commentaren van degenen die deze aanvielen op nieuwssites.

Los van het feit dat de onderzoekers al snel tot de conclusie kwamen dat de “samenzwerings”-commentaren méér “mainstream” waren dan de andere (de verhouding was zo ongeveer 2 op 1), stelden ze ook vast dat de mensen die de officiële verklaringen over 9/11 voor waar aannamen over het algemeen vijandiger waren. Een fenomeen dat wellicht voortkomt uit frustratie over het feit dat de standpunten waarvan ze dachten dat ze “mainstream” waren niet meer als dusdanig beschouwd worden door de meerderheid.

Bovendien, zo stellen de onderzoekers, zijn de bevechters van “samenzweringstheorieën” niet alleen gewoon vijandig maar ook fanatiek in het vasthouden aan hun eigen samenzweringstheorie, in casu “een theorie die zegt dat 19 moslims, waarvan niet één enige bekwaamheid had om een commercieel passagiersvliegtuig te besturen, een verbazingwekkende verrassingsaanval uitvoerden onder de leiding van een dialysepatiënt (Osama bin Laden) die ergens in een Afghaanse grot leefde”.

De negatieve stereotypering die doorgaans van de “samenzweringstheoretici” wordt gegeven, beschrijft met andere woorden niet hen, maar precies hun tegenstanders: een vijandige fanaticus vastgeklonken aan zijn eigen randtheorie. Bovendien blijkt dat aanhangers van “samenzweringstheorieën” meer dan hun tegenstanders zaken in een historische context proberen te bekijken – het grotere plaatje, dus.

Ten slotte: “samenzweringstheoretici” zouden niet graag als dusdanig aangeduid worden. Iets waar Lance deHaven-Smith, die vorig jaar een boek “Conspiracy Theory in America” publiceerde, een uitleg voor heeft: “De CIA-campagne om de term ‘samenzweringstheorie’ populair en geloof in samenzweringen tot het mikpunt van spotternij en vijandigheid te maken, was helaas een van de meest succesvolle propaganda-ideeën ooit”.

Wij van De Maier-Files hebben alvast géén probleem met de aanduiding “samenzweringstheoretici”. Wij beschouwen die aanduiding, net zoals vele anderen, graag als een geuzennaam.

9/11 – The last word has not been spoken yet

Just about everybody is familiar with the fact that concerning the 9/11 attacks – that would get to be the factual base for the American (and in general “western”) foreign policy since 2001 – there exist number of conspiracy theories. Admitted, we don’t tend to take all of them seriously and for many parts of them there is counter evidence which is at least interesting.

We willingly make an exception for the accusations formulated by Architects & Engineers for 9/11 Truth (AE911Truth). First because they are not just a group op conspiracy theorists – they are indeed over 2000 architects and engineers, led by a specialist in building constructions like the WTC buildings -, second because we honestly haven’t seen proves of their arguments being false and have on the contrary often seen them deliver counter evidence for “prove” given by officials.

Today the video hereunder was sent to us: a 40 minute interview by the non commercial channel C-Span (the first American cable and satellite network) with Richard Gage from Architects & Engineers for 9/11 Truth dating from the beginning of August.
